Hello sports fans, and welcome back to the IE Sports Radio Blog. Remember when we got to see Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao go head-to-head in a legendary fight? Or how about the first heavyweight bout since the late 90s that was actually not laughable when Anthony Joshua faced off against Deontay Wilder? No? No one? Yeah, me either. It always seems like we can never get those dream match ups in boxing nowadays and it’s a reason why the sport has declined. However, for the first time in forever, boxing fans are in for a showdown as Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford prepare to square off in one of the biggest fights in recent history.
The Fighters
Canelo Álvarez comes into this bout at 34 years old with an impressive record of 62 wins (39 by knockout), 2 losses, and 2 draws, Canelo is the current super middleweight (168 lbs) champion. He has proven himself time and time again against top fighters and is known for his powerful punches and experience in the ring.
As for Terence Crawford, he enters this fight at 37 years old and is currently undefeated with 41 wins (31 by knockout). He has won championships in four weight divisions and recently moved up in weight to fight at 168 lbs. This fight will be a big challenge for him as he moves up to face a much bigger opponent, much like how Canelo did when he fought Sergey Kovalev.
The Venue
This will be the first boxing match hosted at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Built in 2020 and home to the Las Vegas Raiders, this state-of-the-art venue has a capacity of over 70,000, making it the perfect place to hold an event many expect to be one of the biggest in boxing history. Just keep an eye out for George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon; they may be up to something.
What’s at Stake?
This fight is more than just a championship match: it’s about legacy. Crawford is moving up two weight classes, proving his determination to be one of the greatest fighters ever. Canelo, on the other hand, wants to show that he remains the king of his division by taking on an elite opponent. These would be monumental feats for both fighters.
Expert Opinions
Many experts are excited about the fight but also believe the size difference could be a problem for Crawford. Former world champion Johnny Nelson thinks Canelo’s strength and power may be too much for Crawford to handle. Though these are some strong opinions from well-regarded sources, let’s not forget that Canelo overcame this very same thing when he went up several weight classes (Over 20lbs) and knocked out Sergey “The Crusher” Kovalev in November of 2019. If anyone can recreate this, it's Crawford.
Final Thoughts
With two of boxing’s best facing off, this fight is guaranteed to be thrilling. Fans around the world are eagerly waiting to see if Canelo will prove his dominance or if Crawford can pull off an upset and make history. September can’t come soon enough!
