Diamond Drama: Lake Elsinore Storms Back in Style

Lake Elsinore Storm Rally Past Modesto Nuts in Thrilling 9–4 Victory

What started as a quiet afternoon at the Diamond quickly turned into a rollercoaster of momentum swings, clutch hitting, and a wild eighth inning explosion! The Lake Elsinore Storm overcame an early deficit and delivered a dramatic 9–4 win over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday treating fans to one of the most exciting finishes of the season so far.

Nuts Jump Ahead

Things didn’t look too promising early on as Modesto got to work right away. The Nuts got things going in the top of the first, capitalizing on a groundout from Austin St. Laurent that brought in Ricardo Cova for the game’s first run. St. Laurent wasn’t done either as he drove in Cova again in the third with a line drive single to center extending the Nuts’ lead to 2–0.

Meanwhile, Lake Elsinore’s bats were quiet through the first four innings. Strikeouts began to pile up and Modesto’s pitching looked locked in. However, all that changed in the bottom of the fifth.

The Fifth Inning: Storm Strikes Back

The Storm finally broke through in the fifth, stringing together a flurry of hits and smart base running. Sean Barnett got the rally rolling with an RBI single to left bringing in Yendry Rojas and cutting the deficit to 2–1. Zach Evans followed with a sac fly to center bringing in Kasen Wells to tie it up.

With two outs, B.Y. Choi stepped up and laced a double to center scoring Ryan Jackson and putting Lake Elsinore in front. Kaden Hollow capped off the inning with another sacrifice fly, plating Barnett and giving the Storm a 4–2 lead.

Modesto Answers Back

Modesto wasn’t ready to roll over just yet. Carter Dorighi came through twice first in the sixth with an RBI single and again in the eighth with a sac fly that tied the game at 4–4. The tension was thick heading into the bottom of the eighth, but that’s when the game turned completely in Lake Elsinore’s favor.

Eighth Inning Madness: Duarte Sparks a Rally

Victor Duarte lit the spark in the bottom of the eighth with an electric steal of home plate, a play that completely shifted the momentum and gave Lake Elsinore a 5–4 lead. In the same sequence Rojas advanced to second thanks to a throwing error, setting the stage for the chaos to continue.

B.Y. Choi, who had already driven in a run earlier, delivered again with a two run single up the middle. Suddenly, it was 7–4 Storm. After that there were two walks and by the end of the inning the Storm had plated five runs and built a commanding 9–4 lead.

Pitching Slams the Door

Lake Elsinore’s pitching staff deserves serious credit in this one as the bullpen locked things down late as they combined for 13 strikeouts on the day. The final frame saw Starlin Aguilar and Carlos Jimenez go down swinging sealing the victory in dominant fashion.

Final Thoughts

This was a gutsy yet exciting win that showed exactly what makes the Storm so dangerous. B.Y. Choi was the star of the day, finishing with two hits and three RBIs. Sean Barnett added two hits and scored twice, while Duarte’s steal of home might be one of the boldest plays we’ve seen all year. This is the kind of win that can energize a clubhouse and a fan base. The Storm proved they can take a punch and deliver a knockout of their own when it counts.

California League: Standings Check-In

Despite the win, the Storm still sit in last place in the California League South division with a 2–7 record. Rancho Cucamonga (5–4) currently leads the South, followed closely by Inland Empire (4–5) and Visalia (3–6).

Up North, Modesto remains atop the standings with a strong 7–2 record, but San Jose (6–3) and Stockton (5–4) are close behind. Fresno rounds out the division at 4–5.

On Deck: Road Trip to Fresno

The Storm will look to build momentum this week as they hit the road to take on the Fresno Grizzlies. With their offense heating up and signs of life from the bullpen, Lake Elsinore will aim to climb out of the cellar in the Cal South and string together a win streak.
