Hello sports fans, and welcome back to the IE Sports Radio Blog. We are here to talk women’s hockey! At the end of the 2024 season, New York Sirens goaltender Corrine Schroeder was nominated for goaltender of the year in the Professional Woman’s Hockey League (PWHL). On Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Sceptres at Prudential Center, she showed why, stopping all 28 Toronto shots including 17 in the second period. That allowed New York to stay in the game and eventually end up getting the win thanks to a Jesse Eldridge goal (3rd of the year) with 1:23 to go in overtime. The assists came from Sarah Fillier and Jaime Bourbonnais.
According to New York head coach Greg Fargo, it sound like Schroder could be getting more looks between the pipes:
“I think Schroeder has been our number one goalie for a long time within the organization. I think she’s been demonstrating the level of her play since day one, but there’s a calmness to her game and a competitiveness that we really like right now. Yes, other goaltenders have been getting looks and I think we are fortunate to be able to be deep with both Kayle (Osborne) and Abbey (Levy) battling hard every day. We feel pretty confident with whoever is in net.”
Before this game, Schroeder stopped all 26 shots she saw against the Minnesota Frost back on January 4. In the seven games this season, she is 5-2, with a 1.87 goals against average. Throughout the game, you could hear the crowd at Prudential Center chant Schroeder’s name after every key save.
“I think it’s very nice to hear. I put myself in some bad situations sometimes. A little bit of luck, but it’s really great to have such a great fanbase behind me and them recognizing how well I played today. To show me that support is great,” said Schroeder after the win.
In the first period, the Sirens had a good number of chances to get the first goal. They outshot the Sceptres 10-3 and even had the advantage of a couple of power plays. Those were thanks to two Sceptres penalties, one by Julia Gosling for tripping and one by Renata Fast for cross-checking. Despite some quality looks, Kristen Campbell was able to make some clutch saves for Toronto. Toronto found another gear in the 2nd outshooting the Sirens 17-3 and getting a powerplay of their own. Schroeder was excellent in foiling Toronto’s power play and stopped a breakaway short-handed attempt from Emma Maltais late in the period.
In the 3rd, each team had its fair share of scoring opportunities. Toronto had a chance early in the 3rd period on the power play, but they failed to capitalize. As the game went to overtime, it became the first regular season game in PWHL history to be scoreless after 60 minutes. Renata Fast missed an early chance for Toronto in OT. Later in the period, Eldridge was able to break away from the defense and beat Kristen Campbell for the game-winner.
For Eldridge, it was her third goal of the season and her fourth point in the last three games. With the win, the Sirens move into a tie for third in the standings with the Ottawa Charge (14 points). They have also defeated Toronto in each of their first two meetings this year. New York will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Minnesota at Prudential Center. It will be a big game when you consider the Frost sit atop of the standings with 19 points. New York has beaten Minnesota in each of the first two meetings in Minnesota, outscoring them 9-3.
It should be a good contest between two of the best in the league. We shall see if Schroeder gets the nod at goaltender again. Maybe Eldridge has more magic up her sleeve as well.
