Introduction
You ever read a book where you’re more mad than anything else? That was me with this one.
After loving The Housemaid, I went into The Housemaid’s Secret with high expectations and while it had some good moments, this one didn’t hit the same. It wasn’t as suspenseful or thrilling as the first book. But you know what it did do? It made me mad. Like throw the book across the room kind of mad.
The drama? Wild. The twist? Sure. But the emotions? Oh, I had plenty, especially toward Wendy.
Spoiler-Free Mini Review
This book still brings some classic Freida McFadden elements such as fast pace, short chapters, and a big twist, but for me, the emotional reaction this time wasn’t suspense… it was frustration.
What worked:
Millie is still a strong lead, and I love seeing her try to make things right even when people around her don’t deserve it.
Enzo. That man deserves props.
What didn’t work as well:
The suspense wasn’t nearly as strong as the first book early on, but there was plenty towards the end.
The twists felt more annoying than shocking especially once you realize what Wendy’s really up to.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, but with a heads up because you might walk away with your blood boiling. If you love psychological thrillers and don’t mind messy characters, you’ll still get something out of it.
Let’s Talk About Wendy (Mild Spoilers Ahead)
At first, I was mad at the husband. I mean, he did seem like the classic rich, controlling abuser. But then…. plot twist. Turns out Wendy is a liar faking abuse just to get his money.
I don’t care what anyone says, you don’t fake something like that. Period. It’s disrespectful, disgusting, and dangerous. There are real victims out there, and this storyline made me so mad. Wendy had everything coming to her. And honestly? She got exactly what she deserved.
Spoiler Section: Let’s Really Talk About It. If you haven’t read the book yet, stop here!
Here’s the moment that really got me: Wendy lets Millie take the fall for the murder. Millie. The one who helped her. The one who risked everything. And what does Millie’s boyfriend do? Leaves her there in shock. Doesn’t even give her a chance to explain. Just gone.
I was so mad!!!
But then, Enzo. My man Enzo steps up.
He’s loyal. He sees through the mess. And he actually stands by Millie when it matters most. Total redemption arc for him. I wasn’t expecting it, but it was one of the best parts of the book for me.
Final Thoughts & Rating
Regardless of my frustrations and a different feel overall for this book, I’m still giving The Housemaid’s Secret a 10/10. It wasn’t as suspenseful or twisty as the first book, and honestly, it made me furious! But it still had its moments. The ending was satisfying in a “Wendy got what she deserved” kind of way, and I always root for Millie even when the people around her don’t. The only thing that bugs me about Millie is that she doesn’t think things though. But, no matter what, I’m rooting for her.
Also, shoutout to Enzo. Seriously.
